Lake Tahoe - The Maldives of Sierra Nevada

Lake Tahoe – The Maldives of Sierra Nevada

Looking for an exotic destination near you? Well, you’re in luck if you live in California or Nevada. Lake Tahoe has the clear blue waters and the fine golden sands of an exotic beach and even something more: a phenomenal view of the majestic peaks of Sierra Nevada.

Lake Tahoe is a popular tourist destination that stretches along the state line between California and Nevada. What’s interesting about it, is that it’s the largest Alpine Lake in North America covering an area of almost 500 km². Also, it is the second deepest lake in the United States after Crater Oregon, measuring 501 m in depth.

Bewitched by the Crystal Clear Waters

But enough about facts, I want to tell you how Lake Tahoe feels like. When I first looked through the tall trees and managed to catch a glimpse of the cobalt blue waters of Sand Harbour, I was totally and forever mesmerized. So much so, that for a few seconds, I just couldn’t take my eyes off it and pay attention to the road 😀.

Now, I have to confess, I did look up pictures on the internet of it and of course I was very impressed. But you know how it is, online pictures are often exaggerated. So I decided not to get my hopes up too much. But this was definitely not the case. I never thought that the reality of its beauty would hypnotize me this way. Now, minutes seemed like hours while I was driving on those wavy mountain roads. I just couldn’t wait to get there and be closer to this magical liquid blue lake.

And finally, after a few more minutes I got there. Just a few steps away from the parking lot and there it was. The most picture perfect golden-sand beach bathed in the most spectacular cobalt blue clear waters I ever saw. Again, I was stunned. It actually felt like I was in one of those exotic vacation commercials, :). And even though there were people on the beach and a lot of children playing in the water, nothing could distract me from that breathtaking sight.

Unexpected Cute Company on the Beach

But there’s more! After my hypnotic experience with the beach, I started walking on those beautifully decorated trails around it. And to my surprise, I was stunned again. This time by a couple of noisy squirrels quarreling about an acorn. I just couldn’t believe my eyes! Squirrels on the beach of Lake Tahoe!? I’ve never seen anything like this before. And they were not the only ones.

Along my short walk there I saw a dozen more running around and even a little family that made a nest right between two small cliffs near the beach. Of course, if you take into account that the lake is surrounded by mountains, it makes perfect sense. But still, I would have assumed they would be up in the trees, away from sight, not chasing each other on the beach. And what a delight they were. At some point I saw one in the bushes and started to talk to her. Needless to say she completely ignored me and went on with her running business :)). Of well, at least I tried 😀.

Picture Perfect Views at Lake Tahoe

However, none of these compared to what I saw next. The little trails I was walking on finally led me to one of the cliffs which opened a direct view over the lake and the beach. From there I could see how fabulous this Tahoe really is. Near the beach, the water is light blue and has shades of golden brown, but as it gets deeper the water becomes more blue and at its deeper levels it’s the absolute cobalt blue. Again, mesmerized! I think this lake cast a spell on me :)) And if you take a look at these pictures, it will probably cast a spell on you too :))

So, yes I really enjoyed my whole visit at Lake Tahoe and I wish I could have stayed longer than a few hours. It seems to me that this place is the kind of location where you can spend a few days. Mostly because, apart from the beaches surrounding it, it also has a lot of outdoor fun activities to offer, from kayaking, to paddle boating, hiking, biking and even skiing in the winter season. No wonder it is an extremely popular destination for 3 million tourists every year. The scenic view of Lake Tahoe is a one of a kind experience.

Till next time!

Love,
